Becoming a CFI is a huge undertaking, but we are here to tell you just how possible it truly is!

JoseAngel Hernandez studied to become a CFI under the direction of Chief Pilot James Baker, and we asked him for all the good details. What exactly is it like to learn how to teach others?? Check out his Q&A below (plus, some of his photos from his incredible pilot adventures).

What did you enjoy about ground lessons?

The ground lessons were thorough. We covered a vast area of information concerning piloting and aeronautical decision making, from airspace, flight planning and weather, and building a solid foundation in becoming a safe and knowledgeable pilot.

What was your favorite part about flight lessons?

Being able to go out and perform and apply what we learned on the ground. Being able to see things most people don’t get to experience in a lifetime. Watching the sunset off the California coast.

What was it training like with CFI James?

The training was very detailed and we worked on building a solid foundation to be able to teach the future pilots in our industry. Not only is he a safe and knowledgeable pilot, but he cares about your success and guides you along a path on becoming an outstanding pilot.

What was your most challenging training experience, and how did CFI James help?

Putting together lesson plans when I was a student was difficult. It’s important to find a good balance of information to distribute to my students. James helped with creating an outline and giving direction on which subjects I should focus my attention.

What tips would you give future pilots?

Just be nice to everyone and treat everyday as if it were a job interview. Remember, you're a professional pilot. It’s a small community.

Since earning his credentials, JoseAngel has gone on to fly with Papillon Helicopters at the Grand Canyon, North Star Trekking in Alaska, and United Express for United Airlines.

Today, he is back in LA where he flies an A109 for Helinet Aviation’s Helicopter Air Ambulance operations and an As350 B2 for KCAL 9 Los Angeles. He’s also getting back into instructing and would love to teach instrument students and see them grow as pilots.

It’s awesome seeing a JoseAngel’s success and adventures in the aviation industry. See more on his Instagram at @flying_sombrero!
