Understanding and Avoiding Mistakes

It’s easy to say, “Let’s not make mistakes.” But how can we as CFIs and students REALLY avoid them?

It’s not enough to know an emergency procedure. You have to practice it. This means our CFIs spend a lot of time reading accident reports to understand exactly how to teach our students and become better pilots themselves.

It’s not enough to get those flight hours either. When we develop our lesson curriculum, we create scenarios and hypotheticals to practice our skills and drill into the pre-flight checklist. We have to consciously understand the mechanics of our aircraft to ensure our safety.

Sometimes this also means canceling a lesson based on how a student feels! If today isn’t a good day to fly–maybe you feel a little sleepy or you have a stomachache–it is very important to consider those feelings. We want the most successful flight possible! The same goes for tours. Concerning weather will lead to a postponed tour. While we hate to do it, safety is more important than any change of plans or loss of money.

Do you have questions about safety? We are here to answer them. To learn more about our safety policies, explore our blog or let’s have a chat! We are always happy to host a Zoom call and discuss your concerns whether you’re a student, tour guest, or a member of our community.
